What are Ohio's Governing Bodies doing to Combat Climate Change?

Local government and transit authorities across Ohio are leading the effort to promote alternative fuels, utilize alternative energy sources, improve energy efficiency, and lower carbon emissions to steer Ohio to a brighter future.  These efforts will have the dual effect of lowering American dependence on foreign oil and lower the amount of carbon dioxide, a leading cause of global warming, emitted into the atmosphere.  Alternative fuels include those made from corn and soybeans, and alternative energy sources including wind, solar, and methane gas from landfills.  Government entities across Ohio are reaping the financial rewards of these alternatives while working to ensure a healthier climate for future generations.

Those taking advantage of alternative fuels/energy sources and working to lower emissions include the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, the Cincinnati Metro, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.  Another important method in reducing greenhouse gas emissions is to promote conservation.  Two of the ambitious programs  to curb emissions are underway in Central Ohio, one using alternative fuels and another promoting energy conservation and greenspace.

The Central Ohio Transit Authority has emerged as a leading innovator in soybean-based biodiesel use.  This past summer, COTA has used blends composed of as much as 90% biodiesel.  By using soybean-based diesel, COTA saved an estimated $400,000 in taxpayer dollars, strengthened Ohio jobs through the use of an Ohio grown and manufactured fuel, and lowered greenhouse gas and other harmful emissions.

The city of Columbus and Mayor Michael Coleman are undertaking bold initiatives to promote a "greener", cleaner and healthier city.  The "Get Green Columbus" program provides a broad framework to ensure clean air and water and promote responsible growth and development while saving taxpayer dollars and continuing economic growth. Learn how Columbus is "greening" itself and how your city can do the same.
